Talking with older West Australians about their lives and the challenges they face will the subject of a series of focus groups over the next few months. These are part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring COTA (WA) continues to develop policies and advocate on your behalf about the issues that matter to you.

The COTA (WA) Policy team continues to work towards better health, affordable and suitable housing and employment options for older people. It is also consulting with women as part of a submission to the State Government on its women’s plan – we want to ensure the voice of older women is integral to this plan.

Since our inception 60 years ago, volunteers have been an integral part of our organisation and many of our projects and programs could not operate without this ongoing support. Recently, COTA(WA) has engaged our experienced volunteers, along with new volunteers, to deliver our Aged Care Systems Navigator Trial.  It has been exciting to see how our new team is working together to deliver information and assistance to people struggling to navigate the complexity of the aged care system.

The future of COTA (WA) depends on us becoming more vocal and more visible. It will mean an increase to our volunteer network, albeit in a different capacity. Volunteers will continue to work with us on existing, as well as future, programs and projects. There will also be opportunities for meaningful engagement for volunteers with our policy team, by contributing to our communications and being involved in our events.

To celebrate our 60th anniversary, we will be featuring some of our volunteers across our media channels and I look forward to sharing their stories with you over this special year.
