There are currently a wide range of appeals raising funds for people and animals affected by the bushfires. However, scammers and malicious websites are targeting bushfire appeals and donation.
Protect yourself and ensure that your donation goes to those who need it:
- Double check the credentials of any charity or bushfire fund.
- Do not donate via fundraising pages that do not verify their fundraisers, or do not guarantee that donations will be returned in cases of fraud. If you are unsure, make your donation directly to a charity or official organisation instead.
- If you are donating to a charity or not-for-profit organisation, ensure that it is registered on the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Register.
If you suspect fraudulent activity, you can make a report to Scamwatch, or call 1300 795 995, the dedicated bushfire related scam number. If you think you have paid money to a scammer, contact your financial institution immediately.
